Quite recently we reviewed a very well-priced version of the Dell G5 15 5590 that had a Core i5-9300H and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650. But now we are taking a look at a more expensive model that features the Core i7-9750H and the GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q and costs 2000 Euros (~$2229). I just have the Dell G5 5590 (i7-9750H, RTX2060, 144Hz screen) next to a Lenovo y540 (same except 1660Ti) and I am trying to decide between the two.
The Lenovo is quiet for a gaming laptop, under load you can of course hear that there is a lot if air being moved around, but it is still okay. That aside, the fan control charactistics are nice, too. No sudden fan speed up, but a moderate ramp up/ramp down of speed. The screen would be nice, too, if it didn't have horrible screen bleed, which is NOT only visible on a photo, but also clearly visible when playing games or watching a movie (that is the second copy that I have, and it is even worse than on the first).
Keyboad feels nice, but has no dedicated PgUp/Dwn, Start/End keys, but I could remap some keys of the numpad to do that, so I could live with that.
The Dell has only minimal screen bleed, overall the better keyboad layout (only half-size cursor keys, though). But I don't think that I can bear that noise under load - it is not only the air moving, there is also some high-pitched whine caused by the fans. In addition, the fan would often spin up for a few seconds seemingly randomly, which I find quite annoying.
I like that it has Thunderbolt, too, while the Lenovo has only USB-C 3.2.
I think I can rather get used to the screen bleed than to the noise, but currently I consider returning both, but I find it hard to find an alternative at the same price point (in particular considering that both were black friday deals).
The review would be perfect if there were more images. !!!
