Title: No more cracked screens? German engineering student designs an 'airbag' for your phone
Post by: Redaktion on July 05, 2018, 15:36:56
A German engineering student has designed a 'mobile airbag' case that protects your phone by detecting when it has been dropped and deploying springs to cushion the fall. The prototype has won a national mechatronics award in Germany, and the product will be launched in Kickstarter later this month.

The way he's dropping the phone seems oddly careful.

Rugged case brands also tend to show video examples of the phone falling flat-face down even though that's the least dangerous way for a phone to drop.
If he was sure of his design I'd expect to see the phone being flung, rather than carefully let go, and fall in various angles of strike rather than always face first.
The heights of drop he's showing are far from groundbreaking too.

All in all nothing that might justify relying on moving parts. Especially when these moving parts are attached to a device you usually hold pretty close to your eyes.
