But as always, I like your website & the articles & reviews that are posted here on notebookcheck.net, just don't get the posting of a half-baked unfinished review. This review is potentially also very interesting given that it's a rare beast containing AMD Ryzen with AMD GPU, just would be good to do it justice by posting a finished article.

woah this is interesting laptop. yes i've heard the prototype months ago but curious about it's potential. it turns out the multi-core score is really stands out from the crowd and the single core isn't that far away with 7700HQ standards. GGWP AMD and intel should really be aware of ryzen's future implementation in mobile uses.
Would pick this over a laptop with an Intel cpu eg. i7 6700/7700, due to the number of cores. More cores is the future
I would be interested in the exact type of memory installed in these machines. (Besides being 2400 MHz and CL17) I am going to by one of these alongside an extra 16 GB of RAM, but I'm going to cry if I install the second SO-DIMM and the MB won't boot.

Great start on this article. I was waiting for this :) It would be great if you compared video rendering and encoding on this machine compared to a Nvidia machine of the same general specs to see the difference in Nvidia playback engine vs AMD. In Adobe Premiere Pro, the Nvidia Mercury Playback Engine makes a HUGE difference in video rendering. How good is the AMD graphics compared ? Thanks for the great work ! :)
No miracles here - whatever AMD accomplished with Ryzen is pretty much negated with the outdated 580.

Which part of RX 580 is outdated?
Keep in mind that GL series are ASUS medium segment also.
Judging by how it performs - pretty much every part. Especially the power draw, as usual.

That's a really good laptop. I am not much for gaming on a laptop but a 580 should do for the little I would be doing. Its a 1080p screen so that should do with the included freesync support.
The biggest thing is that 8 core processor that destroys everything else. It can be used for heavy loads while still being responsive. This would last a person years in college. Doing your school work etc.

This is a true multicore desktop replacement. The dream of content creators. Although I would preferred it combined with a 1070.
AMD Ryzen and AMD Radeon matches together. and of course. This Intel and Nvidia fanboys are really annoying. I've been using AMD + Radeon, Intel + HD Graphics and Nvidia. But for more than a decade of my experiences. I would choose AMD powered devices than Intel and Nvidia ones.
I want one with Ryzen 1600 and GTX 1060. I myself have a radeon in my desktop, but it's absolutely obvious that pascal over polaris is a no brainer in laptops. Unless AMD can somehow catch up in terms of power efficiency, it will stay that way.
Nevertheless, i am actually really impressed with Asus. I wasn't expecting them to be able to cool those things, even if it is loud. I thought it would throttle to hell.

Really need to keep in mind that the Ryzen is a 8C part with 16 Threads vs 4C/8T and AMD is better in power except the 7700 HQ which uses only 35% less power while having 1/2 the Cores/Threads
I liked the article, however everything against AMD, as usual (very biased presentation).
Single channel memory not on cons, but Thunderbolt 3 (Intel property) it is.
Single channel mode limits the cpu, slim/small build laptop with 65 w tdp cpu inside (with intel never happens.) limits the cpu/gpu bc of throttling.
72.5 W tdp (from comments)(origianlly rumored 65 w tdp) gpu compared to gtx 1060 80W (MaxQ 60-70), gtx 1070 115 W (MaxQ 80-90), Gtx 1080 150-200W (MaxQ 90-110).
Battery time without switchable graphics always weak in all high end (gamer) laptops. (never more than 2 hours on battery save and than 1 hour under load)

I disagree. Individual software performance is usually dictated by single cor performance. Specifically bloated software that doesn't take advantage of more than 1 core. It could be a CPU hoggy defragmenter like Defraggler, or a stock market trading software such as Fidelity ATP. Heck, even Windows Disk Cleanup is a single core CPU hog while analyzing the drive.
For that reason I would get a Coffee Lake 6-core 8700HQ 45w TDP laptop CPUe'd laptop.
The Ryzen 7 1700 is a desktop CPU, which means it is an energy hog while not delivering any better single core performance than a 45w CPU, or heck, even a 15w Coffee Lake 'u' CPU for short intervals at 4GHZ.
I do not see the logic behind buying this laptop. A 8700HQ would probably have a 6-core base clock of a good 2.4GHZ, 4-core 3.2GHZ or so, 1-core 4.2GHZ turbo or so. And, would likely find itself in a 4.2 pound MSI GS63VR style thin laptop.. or 5.3 pounds 17" version. So why lug around 10 pounds for more multitasking performance? Get a 16-core desktop for that purpose.
I would love to see AMD's Raven Ridge (codename for their mobile Ryzens) in 45w TDP variety (not just 35w and less like they have in the past!) to really compete with the 7700HQ, to bring up the clockspeed close to it. I hear RR will just be up to 4 cores unfortunately, so they best make the best of it, try to hold their own in the 4 core mobile space.
I hope they go beyond my expectations!
A great configuration in a really bad chassis and i thought Amd was cheaper but it seems even more expensive than any I7 + 1060 !!!
Some people mentioned about 6 core intel cpu. Yes they have double weight and double pricing xotic pc has one already.
For content creators, 3d visualizers and other pros that need cpu multicore performance is a super cheap and light package and is the only way to go for now. I wish to all happy 3d or video rendering on the go :)

This is barely a "hands on" article.
Instead of using a heading title such as "Meet the Most Powerful Consumer Notebook in the World" we get complaints about the battery life ?!?!
In an ultra-high performance DTR notebook ?! Battery life ?!
Testing the notebook in Single Channel while the 2nd DIMM slot is available ?!
I want to assess the maximum performance of the platform, not the particular performance level of a certain configuration.
Also, even if you test this particular configuration, do an apples-to-apples comparison and configure the competing laptops in Single Channel with a 5400 RPM HDD as well.
I really hope ASUS seeds the notebook to other websites for a proper review as well. :(
We plan on buying 2 that will not configured with a SSD and 2 x 8 GB RAM (we don't need more).
For autonomy and battery life, we plan on buying the new HP Envy x360 AMD Ryzen Mobile , 5 or 6 of them.

With regards to ASUS, we're disappointed by the missing optical drive bay and the lack of a TouchScreen option. Both are now cheap enough to be offered at least as an option.
But yes, there is no professional engineering pride when it comes to an AMD solution....
If you want to put in a second RAM module, you need to take out the entire cooling system? :o
I've seen worse, I guess, but still this is not a good idea. Nor are the pipes that will burn that second RAM module.
I haven't seen good laptop design in ages.

Do not say BS. There are not any hardware problems. I am using this laptop for many months as a 3d mobile workstation with rendering hours and days.
It's a fantastic laptop and is half the money, less bulkier than N i8700 laptop.
Where did you obtain the 76 Wh battery capacity rating? Did you verify it yourselves?
Many owners have reported the design charge capacity is 76 Wh or 74 Wh, but the actual full charge capacity is shown as only ~60 Wh.
Two questions:
It appears to be restricted to 32GB RAM. Is this just because 32GB SODIMMs are not available yet or is there a restriction in the motherboard/chipset?
Also, importantly, it isn't clear whether it can be set up with two memory channels. Is this the case?
(It says single channel in your article, but then it is only fitted with one SODIMM, so of course it would be single channel.)
Did you really test gaming and non-gaming performance in single channel RAM? That's not serious: that HW config could fly +10fps or more with dual channel RAM.

A new update on the laptop. After 1year of operation, the laptop faced many hardware issues. It has gone 2 times to the service center (replaced both times the motherboard) in a couple of months and the 2nd time that I had to send it stopped working completely no booting at all.
The hardware failure is related to the GPU/screen compo. The first time the display just stopped working. They changed the MB of the device. The signs that it was not working as it should after a year was that when the display drivers were updating during installation the screen became pixelated and unresponsive. You had to do hard reset a couple of times for making the device to boot in windows. Every time that AMD drivers are updating that phenomenon is repeated.
After that, booting the laptop from cold the most of the times do not initialize the AMD graphics driver and is getting to Microsoft standard drivers that have no 3d acceleration and need to reboot the device for making it use the proper AMD drivers.
Mathematically it is a hardware flaw by design that cannot be fixed as they already changed two motherborboards. The laptop at the beginning was updating drivers and worked very well. I can not understand why ASUS after replacing 2 times motherboard the matter remained. I am waiting for their response to see if they will replace the device otherwise take all the necessary legal actions against them.

1 GigaByte dus, dat scheeld enorm.
En de normale ssd schijf die er standaard in zit van 1 TerraByte schijft maar gemiddeld 118 MegaByte.
Heb een snelle ssd schijf nog niet geprobeerd van 530 MegaByte schrijven, maar dat zal die ook wel halen.
Kortom de asus rog strix gl702zc ryzen 7 1700 is veel sneller, maar de hardeschijven die er standaard in zitten zijn te sloom.
De grafisch kaart is full hd, en kan met de Vituele Superresolutie instelling op 4k woorden gezet.
Er zit ook een Hardware accelerator op om films om te zetten, daarmee kan je films omzetten met de grafische kaart.
Dat werkt sneller, en de cpu en gpu blijven koel.
Als je de cpu gebruikt, gaat die voluit draaien en loop de temperatuur op van de cpu.
Daar heb je met deze techniek geen last van.
De grafisch kaart heeft maar 4 GB geheugen, maar is verschikkelijk goed door al ze technologieën.
Ook zit er Freesync op voor Variable Verversingssnelheid.
En Chill voor beperkt fps om enegie te besparen, en Boost voor op beweging gebasseerde dynamische resolutie.
Kortom, Zeer goede laptop, de eerste 8 core laptop zo dat ik weet.
Alleen voor optimaal gebruik kost het je een snelle m.2 ssd, en een snelle normale ssd kaart.
Dan is die top.

Oja en een tube'tje koel pasta is aan te raden voor de processor.
Ik heb er zelf Noctua NT-H2 heat sink compound 3,5 g op gedaan, dat scheelt 30 á 40 graden.
Als de cpu voluit draait kan andere de temperatuur enorm oplopen.
Moest me koeler dan hoger zetten, wat dat een blaas geluid met zich meebrengt.
Vond ik niet zo fijn.
Met de Noctua NT-H2 heat sink compound 3,5 g blijf die goed koel.
En kan je de koel fan van de processor gewoon normaal laten staan.
Automatisch is dat.
De koel pasta is niet duur, alleen je moet er wel je laptop voor open maken, en voorzichtig de fan van de processor afhalen.
Voorzichtigheid geboden dus.
Je kan de processor meetrekken als je de fan eraf haalt.
Probeer de fan iets te draaien, zodat die los schuift.
Wil die echt niet loskomen, dan zo recht mogelijk trekken er aan, dan heb je de minste kans dat de pinnetjes van de processen krom raken.
Is een piel werk om ze recht te zetten.
Ik heb het in het verleden gehad met me desktop, dus weet wat voor piel werk het is.
