Title: Sony is unlikely to reverse its decision on physical discs as its digital transition has been in the works for "some time"
Post by: Redaktion on July 02, 2026, 17:13:52
Sony yesterday announced that starting in January 2028, the company will stop releasing games on physical discs. Many thought that enough criticism might convince Sony to reconsider its decision, but a new report suggests that this is extremely unlikely.

People likely pick the cheapest console from Sony (disk version) and browse Walmart and impulse buy, and hence a disc market stays alive.

But if that option is removed, and they want NBA2K29, they will learn to adopt if that's their only option.

I haven't bought a disk in decades.  Still can play all my old games off Steam and Playstation.  Far more convenient.  I wouldn't care if half my library disappeared, I"m unlikely to play many games from before 2010 anyway.  Theyw ere fun when they were released, but just painful now.

Let go.  It feels good.

Social media often amplifies the opinions of a noisy minority.

I will let go. Of getting a Ps6, that is. Or any console that is fully digital. There is just no reason for such a thing to exist when PC is already doing the digital only thing. But with healthy competition, an open system, near infinite backwards compatibility and plenty of DRM-free options where you can actually own the product you are buying.

I will stick to physical for as long as possible and when no longer an option I will just turn to my already endless backlog. Plenty of great games there to last me more than a life time.

This will be the last straw for me. I've owned every PS console since the beginning, but I have no interest in the direction the industry seems to be trying to go in. One where we rent everything and own nothing. PC is a much better option for digital, and the PlayStation exclusives just aren't good enough to justify continuing to do business with such an anti-consumer company. I sincerely hope enough of us vote with our wallets to reverse this trend, but only time will tell.

Physical games were just about the only thing for me to preference Playstation. If it is digital only then there is zero reason for me to stay.

This day will be looked back in history as an own goal.

These numbers are heavily skewed due to incorporating software without a physical release in the first instance.
