I'm curious about the thermal imaging. Why do the cars have puddles of light beneath them, but none of the hoods or grills, where I'd expect to see a lot of heat, are lit up?

Because most of the heat goes out through the exhaust on modern vehicles. The hood of your vehicle doesn't get hot when you drive around at night. They also usually have sound and heat insulation on the underside of the hood.
