Not that expensive considering Valve doesn't make crap hardware and has decent support. Just look at some of the reviews for the most extensive Xbox controller and how many develop drift within months. Plus the touchpads.

Yeah it isn't that bad in isolation itself. But the problem is, if they're charging this much for something with no memory or storage than imagine how much they're going to charge for something that does, like the machine & frame.
I have (3) of the original ones (sold for 59.99 originally) I bought (2) when they dropped to $5 bucks. And still have them boxed. Valve still supports the original one with regular firmware and software updates.
What people forget is that the Steam controller has more features than most controllers and it will be well supported by Valve. Also, the controller should be compared with the pro controllers from other companies since it has extra customizatable buttons.

Okay, totally different product subject to different pricing pressures. The machine will cost a lot, as does every single other device that contains memory/storage.
