Title: Amazon turns older Kindle e-readers into (almost) useless paperweights
Post by: Redaktion on April 08, 2026, 20:41:49
Amazon is ending support for numerous Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablets in May. After a deadline has passed, it will no longer be possible to load new e-books onto the affected Kindle models, effectively turning them into paperweights.

Especially gutting after they removed the ability to download ebooks you've bought from their store and transfer over USB in February 2024.

You can use Calibre to put books onto a Kindle via USB

And that is why you should not buy this crap and things that are in a tight closed ecosystem.

I chose a Kobo for this reason.

After a deadline has passed, it will no longer be possible to load new e-books onto the affected Kindle models, effectively turning them into paperweights. - this is absolute nonsense, you've always been able to download books into kindle off your computer, via regular usb cable. Yes, it's a (minor) pain to have to convert them into this stupid, closed azw3 format, but callibre does that in little time.
