Title: Dell and Lenovo may limit mid-range laptops to 8GB DDR5 RAM in response to rising memory prices
Post by: Redaktion on December 15, 2025, 03:18:17
With DDR5 RAM prices skyrocketing, some mid-range laptops could soon ship with budget-level specs. TrendForce expects companies like Dell and Lenovo to stock more notebooks with 8GB of memory. These reasonably priced options may no longer handle intense office and gaming tasks.

I'll stick with an older laptop with 16 Gib for many years before I go back to caveman 8Gib again.

How about using the opportunity to offer the 0gb ram option? Their ram has always been a rip off.

So glad I have everything I need to safely ride out this AI dot com bust when it happens.

Im waiting for Sam Altman to argue OpenAI is too big to fail and demand tax payer bailouts after grifting so much investment capital on the false promise of an AI future.

It's a smart move. For mid lower laptops put the old legacy door with one screw to open a Ram slot so later the user can plug in a reduced price 8gb chip. Only the lowest windows models should be limited forever to 8gb.

Definitely waiting for this AI/datacenter/chipflation farce to burst into flames.

These are just rumors, and as the article points out, Windows 11 is practically incapable of running with 8GB of RAM...

It would be truly wonderful if the new NotebookCheck team would stop contributing to the spread of unfounded rumors.

Well I'm all for verified sources, but the economics are plainly obvious:
- Memory chip prices have been multiplied by 3-4 in a few months and are showing no signs of returning to normal (some say it will keep getting worse, wait & see I suppose)
- Stocks are scarce, demand is high
- Computer manufacturers are then stuck with a big problem: either increase prices or lower specs to keep prices steady

Whichever they go for, increasing prices will impact sales, and lowering specs to transfer the memory upgrade price issue to the buyer will result with the same indirectly.

There's no way around it, prices are insane and are going to affect sales one way or another.

I just did an upgrade for someone to windows 11, with nothing open, 6gb ram usage. Many people are having issues running low on ram which they never had on even windows 10.

wow, I didn't know about that RAM usage ... I'm still on Windows 7 and it's using 0.5 GB (without anything open). I would have understood 1 GB, but 6 GB (or others claim 4 GB) is a lot. Must be a lot of s*** going on in the background.
