After reading the bold pronouncements in this article, I read the study overview and found that while statistical data referenced in this piece is accurate, it significantly misrepresents the conclusions regarding the motivations of Gen Z.
While Gen Z is more pragmatic around transportation, 53% of respondents feel a moral obligation to act in an environmentally friendly way — a higher rate than in older generations. They do care, but they don't let it dictate their daily commute because the alternatives aren't practical. The study attributes this behavior to structural deficits, not selfishness. Many feel that sustainable options simply are not reliable enough to use.
Perhaps a more accurate conclusion to be drawn from the study is that Gen Z understands the limits of moral appeals and is frustrated that the world isn't making it easier for them to be green.
