Title: Steam Machine price may be much higher than PS5, after Valve reportedly balks at $500 suggestion

Guesses for the price of the Steam Machine continue to vary wildly. After meeting with Valve, Linus Tech Tips believes it may cost significantly more than the PS5. If priced like a gaming PC, the system may not offer the specs and performance to compete with consoles.

What is the market for this device?

Steam gamers that don't currently meet the average performance of this device probably can't afford it.
Steam gamers with technology better than this device already have superior hardware and it would be a downgrade.
XBOX/PS5 gamers already outperform this device, and have streaming services and a mature platform to play on.

So, Steam players that have expendable cash, room in their living room, etc?

Also, I setup my Steam Deck to my TV, and it took about 15 minutes of troubleshooting to get working (Had to change resolution setting).  Hopefully the Steam Machine works better out of the box!

Indeed - what IS the market for the 'Steam Machine'??

While the different flavors of the Steam Deck currently represent the most inexpensive entry point for new off the shelf systems, the Xbox & PS5 systems both cost more and perform better than it.

Last years models of PC's often dip below the $1000 price point as well as open box and returned items. Reworked or Used items come in at a even lower price point. (all include a warranty)

Frankly I have a number of Laptops and Desktop systems that could run circles around the 'Steam Machine' so even with its 'interesting' size/shape its lame performance would be a downgrade for all but my lone GTX1050M powered system. :)

Considering a GMKtec Mini PC can be purchased from Amazon for $370 (outfitted with a Oculink port), products with 680M-780M iGPU's can be found off the shelf costing < $500USD.

IMHO: A Steam Machine priced @ or above PS5 will be DOA.

It will be 650, so 100 more than the Steam Deck.
