Things can get complicated at large companies, just like how WP7 boss backstabbed the Kin. Companies aren't one entity and when you have 3rd party suppliers involved things can get even more hectic. Things like company A wants to borrow a brand of company B, so they rush to market but notice the segment wasn't as big as they thought so their interest wane mid cycle.
