With the new ThinkPad P1 Gen 8, Lenovo has introduced a solution to this issue: A user replaceable USB-C port. A new YouTube video demonstrates how easy it is to replace it.

And they existed (MXM) once, but were removed from the market, because manufacturers (including Lenovo) didn't want people to have that flexibility.
