Title: GaN chargers accross the board and modular, repairable USB-C: Hands on with the new Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 and P16 Gen 3
Post by: Redaktion on September 05, 2025, 21:38:15
We had the opportunity to get a hands on with the newest 2025 ThinkPad P series, including the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 and P16 Gen 3. One of the key changes for the new workstations: The move to all USB-C charging and Gallium Nitride (GaN chargers).

So many errors and typos in one article.

Thanks for these photos! Sad to see that the P1 is, somehow, getting uglier and uglier with each new generation 😑

Those vents on the base and around the screen look worryingly small no wonder it is limited to 180W

Yeah, true. The predecessor has grills across half the bottom cover: https://www.notebookcheck.com/fileadmin/Notebooks/Lenovo/ThinkPad_P16_G2_RTX_2000_ADA/DSC_0010.JPG (https://www.notebookcheck.com/fileadmin/Notebooks/Lenovo/ThinkPad_P16_G2_RTX_2000_ADA/DSC_0010.JPG)

And the P16 G3 is almost like the X1 Carbon: https://www.notebookcheck.net/fileadmin/Notebooks/Lenovo/ThinkPad_X1_Carbon_Gen_13_Aura_Edition/thinkpad_X1Carbon_G13_bottom.JPG (https://www.notebookcheck.net/fileadmin/Notebooks/Lenovo/ThinkPad_X1_Carbon_Gen_13_Aura_Edition/thinkpad_X1Carbon_G13_bottom.JPG)

🙄

Will either of these have an ethernet port?

Looks like the P16 has one on the back and the P16V has one on the right side if you go by the photos.
I hope more manufacturers keep (or reintroduce) ethernet ports on their laptops, as well as having USB-C PD ports on both the left and right side of the laptop.

I actually like the changes that lenovo implemented with P1 Gen7. We have 1 at home, and recently I was debating should I pull the trigger on P1 gen6 clearance on lenovo website, but ulitmately decided to purchase another gen7. Much nicer design, better screen, way better touchpad and finally no issues with overheating as it was the case with gen6. Also much better build quality. Looking at the pictures, very little changes between gen7 and gen8. I would expect event better battery runtimes. I can get 12h on lcd version and 8-9 on oled.
