Title: Google Pixel 10 (Pro) reduces battery capacity after just 200 charging cycles
Post by: Redaktion on August 21, 2025, 03:56:14
The "battery update from hell" is included right out of the box on the Google Pixel 10, the Pixel 10 Pro (XL) and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Users can do nothing to prevent the reduction of battery capacity and charging speed over time, short of replacing the battery.

Google promised 7 years of updates. Updates that will slowly be degrading your smartphone to push you upgrade earlier :)
From software perspective it's quite easy to set separate, for example, animations for different generations of the smartphone, that will be pushing CPU harder and as a result battery will be draining quicker, but users will think that it's just their smartphone became too old.

Just switch to any other OS and you are safe, like GrapheneOS or LineageOS or similar. Other than that, 100% accurate comment, I agree.

For context, my current Pixel 9 Pro, which I've owned for almost a year, sits at 98% battery health.  I charge it about every day and a half on average.  That seems great to me.

Complaining about 7 years of support (The longest for Android) seems silly.

A company purposefully "downgrading" a device so people upgrade faster has the possible side-effect of people not purchasing that technology again.  I have numerous examples in my own life of products I was dissatisfied with and swore off their brands for good.

Also, with perks, trade-ins, cash back, store credit, I am paying roughly $300-$400/year for a Pixel phone, which includes 2TB cloud storage, AI features (which for the most part work pretty well, although definitely not perfect,) Google One subscription, and current updates.  I'm quite happy with that deal.  Google hasn't burned me yet, in over 25+ years of using their services.  (I don't use Chrome or Google search, though, and never will.)

This is a stupid article.

200 cycles at what percentage? Every time I plug my phone it? 80 to 100? Just not understanding since battery life and usage is relevant to the user.

If I get 1000 charges in 2 years of use then the phone is doing fine.

200 cycles are 200 cycles, no matter if you charge 0-100% 200 times or 50-100% 400 times. This article isn't about the capacity loss that all batteries will inevitably experience over time. It's about a specific part of the Pixel software that will deliberately reduce the capacity starting at 200 cycles, no matter if the battery  itself is still in perfect shape.

I can turn this feature off on my 9 Pro. This story is incorrect and should be tag as fake.

This article is about the Pixel 10, not the Pixel 9 Pro. Google has already confirmed that this feature can't be turned off on the Pixel 10.

The battery on my Pixel 7 Pro, that I'm using for two years and seven months, started swell one week ago without me being able to notice. It was giving signs that needs replacement, I had to charge it more often. I didn't got the chance. The screen cracked and unglued on the right side in the middle. I can lift it with my finger nails. Prior to this, the volum button just snapped and fell off. Also, for like two months, it started to be slow, and stutter. Worst premium phone ever. When I bought it, it took google almost a year to sort out the OS and software in general to behave as supposed to and to be snappy. Terrible 😤😡

We wont have probably discussing this should they have come up with a way to make the batteries removable.
