Title: Smartphones could become far more powerful, compact, and energy-efficient, thanks to major breakthrough
Post by: Redaktion on July 27, 2025, 09:11:48
Researchers at UCLA have developed a new method to create highly magnetic semiconductors, a foundational breakthrough that could pave the way for a new generation of spintronic devices that are more powerful and energy-efficient.

So we will improve from doing stuff instantly fast to...

...doing stuff instantly fast?

It's a phone. A phone.

No it's not a phone. It's a computer.

Nah. A phone. A computer can be used to create, a phone is used to consume and nothing else. Why are engineers using computers to R&D phones, why don't they use those same phones? Pretty self-explanatory, no?

When it gets to be available to run a full-blown OS (which they won't, ever), then we can call them computers. And currently if I snap a photo in 20 ms, but with that new progress that same photo will be snapped in 5 ms... Who tf cares, lol.

That's a very short sighted answer. This breakthrough is about much more than phones, the article mentions phones because this that's a more clickable title but UCLA doesn't give a damn about phones, they're investigating ways to revolutionize how we manufacture semiconductors, phones being smaller or faster or more power efficient is a consequence further down the line but far from the focus of this

Not shortsighted at all, just in line with the article here and its focus on specifically phones. It even ends up with the mention of the S25U being adequate for today's needs while we're waiting for this. I mean - lol.

I agree with you fully though, but it's also worth to mention that pretty much the same article was posted here already just two weeks ago: Scientists make a discovery that could make our devices 1,000 times faster (https://www.notebookcheck.net/Scientists-make-a-discovery-that-could-make-our-devices-1-000-times-faster.1056373.0.html)

Bullshit. Technically no problem, the market is just not there. On Samsung DEX as well as the latest Android version, there is already a desktop mode. Combine this with Termux and you can start Linux x11 desktop apps. Still, you would need to root your phone to run low level apps like docker.

And finally, there is also Ubuntu Touch on the Volla phones.

Right...

...so, remind me again, why is Apple not running macOS on their iPads? Because there is no demand, or because they don't want to undercut their MacBook Air sales? Why don't they do the same with their iPhones, just like the mentioned Samsung DEX? The hardware is definitely more than capable, but the OS...

Samsung DEX is also not Windows, not Linux, not Unix, not RTOS, not... Keep listing it. It's a mobile OS with a desktop-like UI. Yes, there is Linux on DEX, but the experience of using it... Meh.

I love this "argument" though, always followed by a relevant source to prove that claim - not. Same was being said many times for headphone jacks, for removable batteries, for expandable storage, for more RAM in base/starting configurations, for longer-lasting batteries... ...for all of that after it was removed as the reasoning for their removal - "The market is just not there.", yep.

Because, apparently, there is surely the market to buy multiple devices and spend 2-3-5x more money instead of saving money by going with one device. The market to save their own money is just not there 👍 They are simply addicted to waste away money on a phone + tablet + laptop, instead of saving that money by going with just one all-in-one device 👍

The market isn't there because the software is a mess. For example, Firefox/Nightly Android just isn't the same compared to real desktop Firefox.

Termux is dependent on drivers which can be arcane to set up for Snapdragon, and nonexistent for Mediatek (and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3/Elite?). Also serious Termux users do use cooling, so this development does matter for them.

But it's hard to not call modern smartphones not a computer when I can use them to SSH, ffmpeg, etc. in like 5 different ways now. Feels amazing to open Termux on my 8 Gen 1 device.
