I don't understand why Samsung keeps doing this.... Androids core reason was to unify into one giant operating system that runs everything together. Why do we need even more mismatched crap? Work with Google because Samsung is going to crash hard soon if they keep overcharging and under delivering. They don't care what their phone has anymore they just play with preexisting software.

Probably because they want to differentiate their product for better or for worse. Currently they are the biggest Android manufacturer, even more so when you count premium devices.

If they don't differentiate, why would people not pay 2x less for a chinese knockoff?

Of course personally I would prefer them contributing to android itself too, instead of doing their own thing then waiting for vanilla to catch up. But from their business perspective it makes sense. Precisely because things are different, people will be less likely to switch.
