Confused as to why eMMC or SD card would be a good choice for network storage given typical limited read write and size limitations?

It's a router, not a NAS. EMMC is usually both more reliable and faster than microsd cards. The latter can massively improve update and boot times.

you have a usb 3.0 port on the other side. you can plug an external drive there, that is good enough for a home nas.
