Title: Nintendo Switch 2: “Performance-upgraded” variant with 5 nm chip under consideration
Post by: Redaktion on May 15, 2025, 09:45:24
South Korean media outlet Chosun reports Nintendo initially considered using Samsung's 5 nm node for the Switch 2, but ultimately settled for 8 nm. But, the console maker could still use the 5 nm node for a mid-cycle refresh later.

Nintendo cheap out again (surprise surprise)

Does it make sense that developers now have to spend more time optimizing their games to run well, when they could have just used better hardware to begin with (again) thus saving time & money? Nope, that makes too much sense for Nintendo.

Honestly what are they even doing.. Nintendo aren't even the same since they lost Rare during the N64 days, their games were usually better than Nintendo's efforts.

Exactly! Nintendo was killing it in the N64 days, that's why they outsold Playstation by such a huge margin and being so under powered is why Switch sold so few units and so few games! /s

They should have used 3nm for future proofing and 2x battery

And what would they achieve if they didn't cheap out? Serious question. Do you think RTX 5080 tier performance would suddenly become a remote possibility and obtainable?

I think people are forgetting what a relatively inexpensive handheld is or can be, realistically. They've always been underpowered throughout history.

It's not like the performance delta between the very fastest current handhelds and something like steam deck / switch 2 is huge @ < 15w. At best maybe looking at something 30% faster but likely costs 400% more.

And the stuff that isn't as costly (780m apus) is barely any faster at all but have crap battery life.

People are already spamming 'drop the price' on Nintendo's own livestreams. A reasonable suggestion would be something that can bring the price down further not up.
