Yup, it's ironic, but also sad.
Sad that western countries didn't see (or didn't want to see) that battery powered cars is the future. They were comfortable selling unreliable combustion engines with inflated prices.
It's going to take a lot of work to fight back. China is making higher quality cars than western countries while selling them at the same price and sometimes even cheaper.
R&D on western brands won't produce results quickly enough.

All of this happened due to regulations in China. They tried to address air pollution by limiting the amount of ICE cars sold. But you could still buy EVs without limits. This created unprecedented demand and interest from local car makers. At the same time Tesla became a roaring success and China doubled down on EVs. And they already had the lead on western countries.
China is reaping the benefits of aggressive push towards EVs early on.
Norway is a similar case - they applied lucrative benefits for owning EVs. A rich population could afford Teslas. All of this led to a massive lean towards buying EVs there.
While notions of "the pot calling the kettle black" come to mind here however considering even the LAST admin put a %100 tariff on BYD EV's there could be more reasons for them to NOT build a plant in Mexico.
Funny that without 'lobbying' from their ICE vehicle manufacturers (it is after all an Communist Country!) China was able to shift to EV's fairly quickly. Add in the LACK of each and every part/step of the manufacturing process having "profits" baked in China is able to assemble a well made EV at a very affordable & attractive price.

Talk about nonsense, the reason is simple. The plan for building in Mexico was to go around the US tariff. Now that building in Mexico doesn't get you around the tariff, it became pointless.
Clearly not the real reason. It's v. easy to buy any competitors' cars and tear them down. Been happening for more than 120 years, all over the world. The problem is tariffs and NA market uncertainty. I would think, though, their Central and South American markets would be, ultimately, great prospects.

It's called a dictatorial regime for a reason. Central planning decided what the masses were going to buy. They also set their wages. Their human rights are hedious. Look to the BYD plant in Brazil.
That is not a country I am envious of; but to each their own.
It's an ironic statement.. probably a save face announcement. Considering that countries prevent their tech from being stolen by export restrictions.... byd is exporting their products as fast as they make or update them.. lol..
