Team Blue desperately needs a WIN and getting one of the major Gaming Consoles to use one of their chips just might be the kind of good press they could use right now.
Then again it likely will be the options of very expensive and very very expensive.
They need to stop releasing so quickly, beginning to feel like phones being released every year. Don't need a new console with 3 new features. Let technology grow some more before dishing out a "new" console.

The problem is, it is questionable if consoles even have a future.

Nah,they need to actually create a jump worth making now. This can be done with features and finally making a modular console experience/ecosystem. Xbox would be the perfect test subject for this, as they are better suited to handle the job. They could launch it alongside their handheld and only have to worry about upgrading it once in awhile afterwards.
They could make custom made skins for the modular tower and call it a day. They could also keep making cheaper boxes like the Series S for kids and casuals. In a perfect world we would be able to choose our own setup, as in I could go back to the OG Xbox days and slap a Intel and Nvidia card in my Xbox.
