Title: OLED monitor sales will continue to boom, according to an LG financial forecast
Post by: Redaktion on February 18, 2025, 20:41:33
OLED monitors are quickly becoming the preferred choice of gamers and professionals. LG revealed a new sales forecast backing up earlier claims about rising market shares. Why has support for these still-pricey displays risen so sharply?

Oh sure...

while OEM's can try 'Band-Aid' attempts to overcome 'burn in' there is always OLED's 'dirty little secret' of Blue pixels wearing out in a small fraction of the time of other colors.

«One 2008 technical report on an OLED TV panel found that after 1,000 hours, the blue luminance degraded by 12%, the red by 7% and the green by 8%. In particular, blue OLEDs at that time had a lifetime of around 14,000 hours to half original brightness (five years at eight hours per day) when used for flat-panel displays. In 2016, LG Electronics reported an expected lifetime of 100,000 hours, up from 36,000 hours in 2013. A US Department of Energy paper shows that the expected lifespans of OLED lighting products goes down with increasing brightness, with an expected lifespan of 40,000 hours at 25% brightness, or 10,000 hours at 100% brightness»

By the time five years (at least) have passed, there will be even better tech. But OLED is the best tech today.

LG should show us the data that professionals are flocking to OLED. Nearly every person I know that has a life and doesn't exclusively game, say they will not buy OLED. I will not touch one until they come with a 7 year burn-in warranty and prices have fallen 30% at least. To think anyone with common sense that does say 8hrs+ of productivity, would buy a current gen OLED which will show some burn-in after 3-6 months and will be terrible by year 3.

IPS Black or mini-led for now. Maybe 2026/27 will bring better news with widespread adoption of TANDEM displays and blue phosphorescent OLED.

^^ This ^^

While OLED looks great on a TV and my LG 'self protects' with by fairly quickly 'timing out' with a Starburst screen saver pattern, that would be rather annoying in an office along with sight of any burn-in on the screen. :(

IMHO: they can 'project' (wishful thinking) all they want.
