Title: "We have an open attitude for all kinds of collaboration" MSI's Bruce Lin and Green Lin talk about the MSI Claw and the future of handhelds
Post by: Redaktion on June 26, 2024, 11:21:40
Notebookcheck had an opportunity to speak with MSI's regional marketing managers Bruce Lin and Green Lin about the MSI Claw, Windows-on-Arm laptops and its future plans. While MSI will stick with Intel for the foreseeable future, it is open to the idea of collaborating with AMD for handheld chips at a later point.

AMD has proven in the last 5 years to have the best processors for laptops and with the latest release AMD ZEN 5 even more where it doubles the power of its CPU and iGPU compared to Qualcoom and Intel.
All consumers are clamoring in computer forums for an ultrabook with AMD and I think the handheld consoles have proven it.
The amount of money and time that has been lost with the MSI Claw is enormous and it seems that they want to rectify it, but it is too late other companies have already gone ahead.

MSI received money from Intel to launch a failed product and not suffer financial impact, from a business logic point of view no one would choose to launch an inferior and more expensive product.

+1 True. MSI's prestige is over in handheld consoles and Intel, as MSI, has lost almost 1 year compared to its competition, a bad reputation is very difficult to shake off and that is what has happened to MSI and Intel, no one will buy again a game console with Intel and no manufacturer will take the risk and even more so after having seen what AMD ZEN 5 is capable of, you can imagine it in the next consoles uffff......

If MSI cared about reputation, they wouldn't have some of the highest failure rates of laptops

If their 8 inch Claw with lunar lake fails then it will be their end in the handheld market which would be a shame since it would hamper competition from AMD's side somewhat with no true competitor in sight and ARM is a long way from competing with or replacing x86 due to a lack of native software and emulation negating its efficiency benefits.

IMHO: While Intel's chips might eventually catch up there always might be issues with their drivers - surely not as refined as AMD's.

Personally I would not be holding my breath for Qualcomm to come out with anything that has a very usable iGPU. :)

Then there's the unspoken for 'elephant' that has yet to dip their 'toe' in the market - Nvidia. Sure they provided a chip for the Switch and are likely providing one for the Switch2 however could they or more important WOULD THEY produce a high performance APU for the mobile market?

IDK about everyone else but I'll have to wonder/dream about what Nvidia might be able to bring to the table. With the renewed efforts/focus on WIN-on-ARM I'd wager that an Nvidia product would at least have a decent iGPU. :)
