Title: Google Pixel 9 Pro revealed with 16 GB RAM but 128 GB storage in pre-release leak
Post by: Redaktion on April 19, 2024, 19:24:11
Google's next flagship smartphone releases are not expected to land until the autumn. Nonetheless, someone has already got their hands on the Pixel 9 Pro, which Google has equipped with 16 GB of RAM and triple cameras to take on Apple's iPhone 16 Pro.

They're adding more RAM because Gemini/AI uses up a large portion of it.

And they're not add any storage because they want to sell Google drive...

But they are still trying to sell morons laptops with 8GB and 16GB, when the minimum is 32GB, and preferably 64..

99.9% of the technically illiterate population do not understand that a really useful neural network requires tens of Terabytes of RAM and petabytes of storage. Everything else is toys for fools.

And 128 GB is enough because it's a phone. 1-2 TB SSD is cheaper and infinitely faster than any cloud storage and it is most certainly much cheaper than any potential upsell for larger storage in a device. There's also a cable to plug to one's PC and transfer all data from the phone.

But installing an expensive and capacious disk in a smartphone has another unpleasant feature - a waste of the planet's resources, because if the smartphone fails for other reasons, the disk is most often thrown into the trash, because it is unlikely that anyone will remove soldered chips from a failed motherboard; this is unprofitable and difficult. And capacious disks can easily outlive the typical lifespan of an ordinary smartphone by 5-10 times in terms of resource.
This is a global problem considering the number of smartphones sold and used in the world. The internal disk should be easy to remove and reinstall on new models, because if it still has a lot of resource, why throw it away?

And the more capacious the disks are, the stronger this problem of wasting resources will be...

In the end, such disks should simply be moved to a new smartphone or used somewhere else.

Capacious and fast, low-power nand chips are much more expensive than mass-produced SSDs of the same capacity.

Moreover, the more capacious the disk, the higher the rest consumption. Same with RAM.

All external microSDs are much slower than built-in drives, and at the same time, the readers and they themselves consume significantly more than optimized and carefully selected built-in drives. This is why microSD slots are most often abandoned - they dramatically reduce battery life, especially if code and frequently used data structures are transferred to them.

Large RAM allows you to reduce intensive exchange with the disk and swap file. This leads to increased autonomy and the ability to simultaneously hold more software and data in memory, which increases the smoothness of operation and system response. But a large RAM capacity, as written above, also increases background consumption. This requires a carefully calculated correct balance from the developers.

8-16gb of ram is perfectly fine for anyone who is buying just to browse and watch YouTube maybe...
