So according to benchmark results the 8840U is ~6% faster in terms of MT performance than last gen at the same TDP.
I own two devices with the 7840U chip and both scored ~12600 in CB R23 at 28W ~ 30W.

It might have to do with RAM speed difference, not the CPU in particular.
intel does +4-6% gen-to-gen at same tdp "intel sucks, intel hit a wall, intel doesnt think about users"
amd does +4-6% gen-to-gen at same tdp "yeah thats the s*** go amd"
apple does +50% gen-to-gen at same tdp "no innovation wth, apple hit a wall, steve jobs wouldn't like it, apple greedy"

Both have at least as fast RAM as this new model's (6400MT/s). ROG Ally seems to be the best at benching. Its Z1E can boost to 50 odd watts which leads to a ~15.5K max score in CB R23 (haven't tuned mine yet so 30W is the cap). But looking around, 12.5K @ 28W seems to be about average.
