Everyone would like cheap energy. For the electric car, radiant heater, heat pump, air conditioning or coffee machine. A new tandem solar cell promises exactly that, and on a large scale.

These "revolutionary" discoveries without commercial viability are pointless, silicon panels can last more than 40 years. No one to date has managed to solve the durability problem of Perovskite-based solar cells.

It gets tiring to see the same disappointment for more than a decade

Also,it's not the calcium titanite here (which was one of the first perovskites discovered - perovskite is the more general name for the chemical and crystallographic structure), those are organometallic halide perovskites. Most common ones are lead and iodide based.

They are probably going to find that the ones with substantially higher efficiency comes with a compromise like they are finding out with all areas of research.

Either it is cheap as current silicon panels but with lower lifespan, or quite a bit more expensive with similar lifespan.

Storage for example has that compromise where Tape is among the highest for data retention when power is off, and optical storage coming next. SSDs have a lot lower finite time before data is corrupted on the flash cells. So for storage the compromise is speed in access times versus data retention.

Optane SSDs for example were rated at having only 3 months data retention times.
