Apple's new A17 Pro SoC is only marginally faster than its predecessor in Geekbench 6.2. Its single-core performance improvement is around 10%, and multi-core about 5%. https://www.notebookcheck.net/Apple-A17-Pro-disappoints-in-maiden-Geekbench-run-rumour-suggests-it-is-a-rebadged-A16-Bionic.750697.0.html
Main test would be if they increased the perf/watt compared to A16 and by how much.
How is 10% not an impressive gain? These chips are faster than my intel Macs now, and they have been for some time.
Feels to me like there are multiple reasons.
- Testing the 3nm architecture, hence not a lot of drastic changes in design.
- manufacturing difficulties
- not optimised for the architecture
- typical Apple low year cycle
OP can you please post the scores of the A16 Bionic results you are using because from the ones on Geekbench itself the perf improvement is +16% and +12%
