Title: NUC lives on with heavy investments from mini PC makers like Simply NUC
Post by: Redaktion on July 12, 2023, 17:53:45
Intel may be abandoning the NUC business, but the NUC design and branding will most likely be licensed to mini PC OEMs. Among the first SFF makers to plan increased investments in the NUC line is Simply NUC, a company that has deep ties with Intel.

I think the biggest short coming w/ NUC honestly was the branding.... I think intel shot themselves in the foot when they named it. They shoulda just simply called them mini/ micro PCs or something more savory tbh. AMD did what Intel struggled to do for years by just making integrated GPU's that dont suck which is why minipc's from like beelink, minisforum, etc are selling like hotcakes.

I'm not sure the "NUC" branding was a problem. I heard about it for so many years and it almost became a generic term in these circles.

What is clear is that these have been overpriced. Even on the used market.

Oh my goodness, do a price comparison between the Minisforum UM790 Pro and the SimplyNUC Moonstone R9 CBM3r9MS, two equivalent devices...how does SimplyNUC even stay in business?

This. The form factor and build quality was great, but NUCs were always prohibitively expensive once you added all the necessary components. I have 5 of them, and bought each one only when they were heavily discounted or on sale. The first two, bizarrely, even lacked the power cord from the brick to the wall. Why, Intel, why would you do that???

Sad to see them go, but I'm not surprised, honestly.
