That's dodgy stats.
The average price of cars in the US is skewed high as Americans are buying way more SUVs than sedans or compacts. So comparing the price of an EV sedan to that number isn't meaningful. The average price of a sedan is much lower.
For example, I recently purchased an ICE Toyota Corolla SE CVT and it cost $23,000 Canadian which is around $17,000 US and it comes with all the bells and whistles including a limited self-driving feature (technically lane-keeping).
