Looks like Epic messed up. Initially, the Director's Cut was offered for free (as shown by the attached image). They have changed it to the original now, by the looks of it. Nonetheless, I've updated the article with the correct info.

Epic's servers are all over the place. I'd say give it a few hours and try again.
The base version of the game is free. The directors cut upgrade is heavily discounted.
Get the free base game and buy the discounted upgrade.
Much cheaper than buying the directors cut(even with discount) maybe a 1/3rd approx.
The Director's Cut was initially free for pretty much the first hour or so.
Claimed and playing currently, even though they have now changed it over to the base game.
Anyone who got the Director's Cut freely has kept it.
Now nothing is free and everything is just heavily discounted. The base game is around 20 pounds and the upgrade is about 5. They just keep pulling back and didn't keep the promise of 24 hours when heres 3+ hours left on the clock.
Why do they always choose single player offline games to make free?
Tired of playing on inactive/dead crappy cracked servers.
Make something like modern warfare ii (2022) free instead. Or halo MCC, or anything that allows people to express to others they're the superior player on an active server.

Yup, I tried and failed a few times at first then decided to wait...bad choice. But I still got the base game for free and the upgrade was 40% off, resulting in a total of ...still less than $5 IIRC. It was very strange that the director's cut upgrade was under director cut's page(implicating that the upgrade is

to), I read the description a few times and it still should upgrade the base game to director's cut, but I currently don't have the hardware for it so I didn't try it out. In the unlikely case that the upgrade doesn't work...well I believe could still get a refund since my play time would register as 0?
