Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has been fined €265 million (~US$275 million) by Ireland's Data Protection Commission (DPC) due to a data breach affecting Facebook during 2019. This breach affected over 500 million Facebook users. This marks the fourth such fine from the DPC since the Fall of 2021.https://www.notebookcheck.net/Meta-fined-EUR265-million-by-Ireland-s-Data-Protection-Commission.671218.0.html
There was a time when Ireland didn't care for big tech violating laws because all it wanted was their tiny tax contribution. Apparently, Ireland is taking EU laws seriously now. Another active country is France. Law enforcement related to data protection is improving in the EU - good! Time won't be far when the big tech companies can't file fines for such law violations under petty cash any more. They will have to realise that the EU is not the USA.
