SD - yes, I am well aware of the fact that Windows 10 S can be upgraded to either Home or Pro. If you read through the comments below, you will see that the reason I opted not to enable this functionality was to keep the Go performing optimally. Switching to Windows 10 Home or Pro would negatively impact its performance as either is more system resource intensive than Windows 10 S mode. Sorry if this was not made clear in the article.

What was covered was a good comparison, but there is an elephant in the room. It is inaccurate to say that you can only install apps from the MS store on the Surface Go. You can very quickly and easily change to Windows 10 Home (or pay for Pro) and install just about anything you want. This is a huge advantage for many users (like me).

The gpu performance of the Go is actually pretty good (hence they went for a Pentium Gold proc). The cpu performance is not that good indeed but it is reliable in power usage so it is easier to predict how long the battery will work.

I went for the Surface Go rather than the Pro in this comparison for two reasons. Firstly, the Go is in the 10-inch to 11-inch size range. Secondly, it's the only new Surface to feature LTE connectivity built-in. The Surface Pro 6 comes in Wi-Fi only. Stay tuned, however, as I plan to compare the Surface Pro 6 with the Google Pixel Slate in the near future.

Wouldn't it be better if you compared sp6 with iPad pro? Surface go is half the price!

I deliberately didn't disable Windows 10 S for this comparison as it would have, if anything, hampered the performance of the Surface Go.

You limited Surface Go to Windows 10S Only? It is literally just going into settings and disabling it.

On other note, Microsoft really needs to improve Tablet Mode and its gestures and animations.

What would actually be brilliant is detachable 2-in-1 laptops running on Apple's Ipad processor.

More powerful than Snapdragon and more efficient than Celeron / Pentium and Core M / Y. And not substantially overpriced like the before mentioned chips that can't compete against i3 ULV in terms of value.

I believe the Surface Go can use full fledged windows and app beyond the Store. There is a simple setting that allows this, so would call this Windows 10 S limitation a bit unfair.

SAMSUNG... where is my GALAXY NOTE 12.2 replacement....?

Re comments here.... I find my Android 5 year old GN12.2 and essential part of my professional work (architect) and love how Android apps so easily share with other... regarding power.. well considering I can even run CFD analysis apps on this 5 year old device..(WINDTUNNELCFD) performance has never really been an issue... as for keyboard... well with a 12.2 inch display there is plenty of room for a screen keyboard and handwriting recognition is pretty good.. never missed a physical keyboard...  and I use a Samsung HM5100 bluetooth Spen.. really comfortable.. and can even double as a James Bond style Phone..... all in all I love it.

But SAMSUNG... ANDROID 4 AND MY GN12.2 are tired of working so hard for 5 years with no support from you...

GREAT HARDWARE... HORRIBLE SUPPORT

PS still on original battery

The tablet market has been dominated by Apple's iPad for some time. Although it continues to get shot down for its productivity capabilities in an enterprise environment because of its mobile OS origins, it offers a great blend of portability and performance. Its closest direct competitor is the Samsung Galaxy Tab range, which is similarly powered by a mobile-first operating system. The enterprise-first alternative is Microsoft's Surface line of tablets, the most recent of which with 4G LTE capabilities is the new Surface Go. We have had all three devices on hand to put them to the test in this three-way comparison.
