You CAN delay feature updates for up to 365 days:
win+i / update & security / Windows Update / Advanced options.

I got three very different computers updated now to version 1809. Without problems (all directly updated from version 1709).

Always sad (and a little amusing) how so many people goes on to rely on Microsoft to take care of all safety at feature updates.
Get a working system backup; Macrium Reflect has worked for me since windows 8 was introduced, and saved my thinkpad from incurable microsoft introduced problems. Worst the latest years: Update to version 1803 made my thinkpad unbootable.
Macrium reflect system backup worked once again   :)
