The Echo Dot easily connects to any Bluetooth speaker or, via wire, to any audio. It sounds great. Your article seems to imply that this is not the case. With the ongoing improvements (recently Alexa can now understand context, like Google Home), it's sure to stand up against any competitor. It is a phenomenal device.

Big ears. We looked at the smaller of the two speakers by the US-based retail giant with Amazon's Dot. While the assistant Alexa was very convincing in the test, the power consumption and data security provided reason for criticism.
