Just for the sake of history.
This piece of machinery lasted for almost four years (which is better than some other laptops i've had fwiw).
Overheating continued and after two years one of the fans gave up, why would they make one fan magnetic bearing and the other sleeve bearing is beyond me.
Apart from persisting touchpad issues the keyboard stopped recognizing some keys.
Installing an M2 ssd made the laptop produce weird sounds via speaker (on windows and linux). Disassembling this is a nightmare btw.
Eventually it stopped charging so was working only on AC for a while until it stopped turning on at all.
Rest in bin.
Never going to buy Acer again.

Hello,I was wondering about the future of gaming since I'm a gamer and I've searched online but couldn't find it,could I maybe switch the graphics card with the newer one or the processor or that I have more gb RAM and not only 8 or can I not do anything any of the above, thank you for your answers.
(I have this laptop but don't really understand electronics.)

Awesome laptop! Great sound quality, fast in games, cool after hours of gaming (cool meaning you can maintain hand on keyboard), great keyboard feeling, hope to be reliable in time!

Hi,

Really nice review! I was looking for a not too heavy desktop replacement that could hande heavy programs. I bought this laptop with the same specs based on your review, and i have not been dissapointed. It runs games like dark souls 3 really well on hd (not ultra), and god is it fast! The laptop can get hot when plugged, but never uncomfortable.
There are some downsides though: you can hear a very soft annoying 'scratching sound' coming from the inside of the laptop, battery is not long, and waking the laptop up from sleepmode actually takes longer than starting the laptop normally. I only experienced throttling when the laptop was low on battery and powersaving settings were set to 'powersaving' (instead of high performance). But besides these small nuisances, the laptop is a powerhouse that is relatively affordable and actually really portable.

Best,
NotebookGeek

I have this laptop, and there is only one thing that bugs me about it - The fact that the mouse or USB port is at the RIGHT side of the computer. Being a right-handed gamer, I do need to move my mouse around quite a bit and I find the USB inserted interferes with my mouse movements. Ergonomics - 4/10, Rest is pretty decent.

Excellent review which answered all my questions. I purchased this machine after reading this review.

Do you need a workstation to take it to work ? Then :
Remove the fancy stickers. Unplug the fancier red light cables of keyboard and the back... Remove the HDD and the optical drive (stick the plastic cap back) for weight reduction. Now you have a nice workstation around  6.1lbs (one of the lightest 17 inch in the market with quad cpu).

Optionally disable the NVIDIA and it is dead quiet (under linux)...

The only con I have: It is thin machine but long & wide. Acer should crop the frame by 1cm from each side !   I prefer something thicker but smaller in other dimensions.  Thinner does not mean more portable.

The B173HAN01_0 is an AHVA panel not IPS.

Actually according to: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/content/panel_technologies_content.htm#ahva

AU Optronics have invested in their own IPS-type technology since 2012, dubbed AHVA

Did you notice any significant differences between this new updated nitro black edition (17") and the smaller 15" model with the same specs? To my knowledge they are pretty much the same, just one has a smaller screen and therefore lower weight a little bit. My main concern is the heating on the smaller one.
