On the surface, giving up FREEDOM in exchange for security is historically a false choice! Moreover, referencing gov't sadly misses the mark! "Gov't" is a  necessary evil, an entity with a big hammer that's ALWAYS looking for nails to pound! Those 'nails' being representations of our remaining FREEDOMS! And the "gov't" weilding the hammer(s) is know-nothing power-mad losers and incompetents who couldn't compete in the market place of employment where merit, productivity are qualifiers. WE ARE DEEP INTO GOV'T CONTROL HAVING ACCEPTED THE EXCHANGE OF FREEDOM FOR SECURITY NOW HAVING NEITHER! ITS NOT THE PLACE OF GOV'T TO CONTROL FREE PEOPLES! TAKE BACK OUR ELECTIONS, OUR BORDERS, OUR CARS, OUR CONTROL!

Sorry, but no. Balancing freedom and security is always the norm of society, otherwise the result you get is anarchy. Do you believe someone has the freedom to murder people?

You want to pretend government is some unknown foreign entity, but government is a collection of people. And it is the people as a society that decide where the bar is. You and everyone simply got too hooked up into picking lesser of 2 evils instead of doing our job of making sure government is transparent and accountable

Quote from: Daryl Mason on June 04, 2023, 00:43:00With regard to AEB on newer vehicles. Can we expect a significant cost reduction in auto insurance? Has AEB actually been tested at intersections involving red light runners?

According to insurance agencies, AEB does reduce crashes so it should in theory reduce insurance rates. Of course I say in theory because there is no guarantee those savings will be passed to consumers or not

Quote from: Pete Namlook on June 04, 2023, 01:27:22Oh great, more mandated BS for big brother to save us from ourselves....wow a whole 360 saved a year for 360 thousand (likely more) to suffer because of it. Government needs to worry about the poisons FDA approved and allowed in our food, and our water contaminated with forever chemicals and stop worrying about little BS like this.
Quote from: Mark A on June 04, 2023, 16:36:10Really? We need another piece of unwanted hardware in vehicles in order to save a few lives? Why cant the government focus on real problems killing people like cigarettes, Alcohol and Drugs not to mention junk food and drugs! Howbout banning automatic machine guns from mentally sick people? That could save as many lives in 1 hour compared to this piece of junk! Come on Uncle Sam! There are far more things you should be worried about than this ridiculous thing!
Quote from: Alop on June 04, 2023, 23:56:01More technology added to up the price of auto's and more expense to repair to save an ESTIMATED 365 lives? Gtfo

So would you exchange your life and the life of the person you love most? Statistically, that is only 2 people! A small price to pay right? Everyone is quick to throw out the lives of others until it is their own.

PS FDA, SWDA, EPA and NHTSA are completely different agencies. The NHTSA can not regulate food or water. One does not stop the other so your logic is quite flawed

Quote from: Rufus on June 02, 2023, 20:59:24Unless all cars are retrofitted at the same time, this will lead to fatalities when a car automatically breaks hard and the vehicle behind it, maybe a big rig, doesn't have automatic breaking and slams into it. Almost happened to me when I quickly merged away from a vehicle that was going to merge into me in my 2013 Avalon. The car slammed on the brakes automatically right in front of a tractor trailer due to the proximity of the car that merged into me. Thought I was going to die that day, but luckily wasn't killed.

Auto braking isn't just braking, if you are going at highway speeds and something in front of you is small, it will slow down first to limit the impact. Not jump straight to braking. At city speeds it will brake.

But I do agree that V2V standards are long outdated.

Overall, all studies show automatic braking reduce deaths significantly

Quote from: Jason42t on June 02, 2023, 23:52:40Absolutely ridiculous move yet again. Just imagine how much extra your next car will cost. I'm from NY they are trying to implement "Smart Speed Limiter" amongst other things that easily will add tons on a brand new car. The Speed governor won't let your car exceed the speed limit. USA is ridiculous with yet more rules and regulations and they don't care how much it costs you. In NY brand new cars bought after 1/1/2024 7mos from now. NY sucks and so doesn't the United States. This is definitely not the land of the free.

Automatic braking isn't that expensive, and considering lives are at stake, it is well worth it.

PS US was never the land of the free. It is the land of corporations

All this over saving 360 lives in a country with a population of 400 Million???

So Orwellian, I enjoy driving an automated car would have excitement of  an elevator ride, and the accompanying music...k8nda thought a guy that bought a Maclaren wouldcget that...or is this for the little ppl?

Automated braking, not automated driving. If every car had automated braking, many lives can be saved. Especially children which are often times hard to see due to their lower height and cars only getting larger.

About time, manufacturers were promising to make automatic braking as standard on all cars by 2022. Yet they failed to keep their promise. So many lives harmed.

NHTSA should also add testing of these braking systems to the test and don't give 5 stars to cars without it or failing systems

Quote from: Brad Collins on May 31, 2023, 21:14:10Why exactly does the article talk about Tesla so much? If I recall correctly Mercedes came out with this in about 2006 and I suspect most of the other premium manufacturers had it before the Model S even came out.

The earliest dates I could find online for Tesla introducing AEB was in 2015.

So why talk about Tesla so much? It isn't like they invented it and now plenty of standard brands such as Kia and Toyota have it on most of their vehicles.

I think the reason is because they were the first one for 100% of cars coming with automatic braking as standard.
