A completely pointless option today - no 4k@144Hz monitor supports this frequency over HDMI 2.1, because. the dastardly manufacturers cut the bandwidth in half to 24Gbps instead of the original 48. But the great honor of the technically illiterate population is not aware of this fact. Such monitors can only be connected via TB4 (it seems impossible via USB40) in the 40 Gb / s video traffic tunneling mode via a special TB4 cable and nothing else. So HDMI 2.1 is of no use today due to the fault of monitor manufacturers.

You are giving false information. It only has two built-in USB40 ports -

A pointless undertaking, with the worst reliability, given the SSD. Only RAID10 offers the advantages of reliability and high speed. This requires a minimum of 4 M.2 slots. As for example, in professional laptops or in the gaming MSI Titan 2022 (the 2023 model already has only 3 M.2 slots, which makes it impossible to create a fault-tolerant and fast RAID10 array).

Same here. 2x 1 TB in RAID1.

Also, I'd have liked two more USD4 ports on the back of the computer, rather than four USB 3.2 ports, since the Ryzen 9 7940HS can support four USB 4.0 ports.

But I'm still interested. My laptop is eight years old, and while it's still running like a champ, the low RAM and small SSD are becoming a problem.

Quote from: heffeque on May 22, 2023, 21:06:24Awesome CPU performance, the best iGPU there is (can actually handle mid-tier games on mid/high settings, and high-tier games on low, which is a lot more than what my dedicated MX150 can say), and all in a living-room-friendly machine (really small and really quiet: quite a bit quieter than other brands).
This version fixes the RAM/SSD overheating problem that the UM690 has... and adds HDMI 4K@144Hz so... I can't find any flaws!

I was originally going to buy this the 1st day it came out (which would be today), but decided to wait for the HX99G successor, because I now want a dedicated GPU and support for HDMI 4K@144Hz (for future-proofing).

+1 Honestly impressive performance with AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS, an 8-core, 16-thread APU with a Radeon 780M iGPU and 35W TGP.

Furthermore, MINISFORUM equips the UM790 Pro with two M.2 2280 slots, one M.2 2230 slot for modem and two SO-DIMM slots. In addition, the mini PC has two HDMI and USB4 ports each, four USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, a 3.5mm jack and a 2.5

With RDNA 3 + FSR 3 about to be released you don't need a dedicated graphics card for any AAA games, 3D rendering and video.
I like it for my living room or to be able to take it anywhere.
In Professional Forums they hope to see ultrabooks from OEMs with AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS soon.

Quote from: Minnie Biggie on May 22, 2023, 21:46:44You know, you can connect an external GPU to the UM790.
That would totally destroy the "living-room-friendly" part of it.

I am glad they replaced the now practically obsolete SATA connection and space for a SATA drive in older Mini PCs with 2x full size NVMe connectors in this unit.

I wish they would offer a purchase config with two drives though.

MINISFORUM is now selling the UM790 Pro, an AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS-powered mini-PC available with up to 64 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD. The MINISFORUM UM790 Pro also features plenty of expansion options and should be powerful enough to play modern games thanks to its Radeon 780M iGPU.
