Only there the population of the world will at least partially get rid of the walls of the digital concentration camp under construction. One of the grains in the foundation of the free world.

You forgot to add, make ROM removable on smartphones.

(*-I kid. I have no idea what is next, it just seems like the EU could have at least waited until the NEXT standard was released, so all manufacturers would be on board at same time. Because we ALL know USB-C will not be the main standard in 5 years.

Is there a need? USB-C pretty much addresses most of the issues. USB-A/B lasted 25+ years. With portable devices, Mini-USB came out, but it was too thick for thinner devices so MicroUSB came out

USB-C wasn't just a replacement for MicroUSB, it replaced USB-A while eliminating need for Micro. Added dual side support, and merged in support for HDMI/DP, Thunderbolt, 3.5mm and etc. You aren't getting a thinner connector and it is flexible enough for other use cases. So unless AI can come up with a more perfect port shape that is easy to manufacture, you aren't going to get another connector for at least 25+ more years. And when that happens, they can just add it to the standard

What blows my mind is the fact that Apple previously used a 30 pin connector!

30 pins!

Even HDMI only uses 19 pins and that was designed for uncompressed high speed video transfer!

Apparently, this was (irq5.io/2012/06/25/the-apple-30-pin-dock-connector) due to its inclusion of:

  • USB
  • Firewire
  • Audio Line in
  • Audio Line out
  • Dedicated audio GND pin
  • UART
  • Analogue Video

Utterly crazy, given that 95% of cables and accesories probably only ever used 4 out of the 30 pins!

All standards are legalized by the time when they are already meaningless from the point of view of ordinary consumers, because the market itself is already organizing itself in favor of the standard that has won the market.

Instead of this crap, it was necessary to oblige ALL manufacturers in a MANDATORY order to do the following:
1. Introduce programmable thresholds for switching on battery charging in all smartphones to make the battery. when the smartphone is connected to charging, it was not killed by a constant charge at the slightest self-discharge. As it was done a long time ago in laptops.
2. All USB-C ports must have a DP / HDMI output (because they are ALREADY built into all SoCs) and be at least USB 3.0 Gen1.
3. All smartphone manufacturers MUST transfer absolute control to the owner of the smartphone when sold in the form of a Device Administrator account. Those. all owners must have root permissions on the smartphone.
4. All smartphones MUST have a built-in firewall that allows you to block ANY network activity, including system components of the OS kernel, if the owner so desires.
5. All smartphones MUST have certified hardware shutdown of cameras and microphones and network units when the owner clearly needs it for the sake of private security.

All this would RADICALLY change the world of smartphones in favor of a free and civil society. But do European commissioners care about the freedoms and rights of citizens? I think this is a rhetorical question for a long time. As well as a question to the US authorities, where most manufacturers are based ...

Well, finally. It was time for manufacturers (that means you Apple) to stop with anti-consumers practices. There is also  the environmental cost...
I hope that next up is a standard for repairability/upgradability.

The European Union has set December 28, 2024 as the hard date when most electronics must include USB-C charging in order to be sold in EU member states. Perhaps most notably, this will force Apple to fully abandon its Lightning standard in order to sell iPhones in the EU. Laptops will have to include USB-C charging by 2026.
