There are a lot of reasons someone might want the fastest card. Hosting your own media server and attempting to encode several if not dozens of 4k high bitrate files to multiple users, while still gaming simultaneously is one great example. I am one of those users who think, while yes lower end cards can indeed play most games at 1080p 60fps, that's just not nearly enough for someone like me. I don't even consider myself a power user all that much. I bought a GTX 1080ti several years ago that I have been using. Yes, it's good enough for gaming. However, it is nowhere near good enough to run those very same games on even the cheapest $200 4k 60fps TV. Meaning, you'd need a much better card if you intend to have a living room gaming setup that runs at a constant 60fps high-ultra. Medium settings just don't cut it for a showroom like a family's living room.
Personally, my 36TB raid0 is nowhere near large or fast enough for my storage needs, my 16 4+ghz cores constantly get pinged at 100% sometimes, and my 32GB of memory is constantly being filled. I had an out of memory error just yesterday... I may be a very special use case, but again I consider myself a person on a very tight budget, and I buy most things used, and everything I mentioned is not even half decent enough compared to what I actually think I would use on a daily basis.

I currently own a GTX 1080, thinking about a new card to game at 4k.  Haven't needed anything until now.

But historically Nvidia has hosed gamers every chance they get. Aside from jacking prices,

Gsync - Proprietary, was very expensive monitors.
Freesync - not

Dlss - proprietary, only works on newer gen cards.
FSR - works on everything.

Nvidia forces you to buy the latest, AMD gives it to you for free.  Really want to buy an AMD card this time around and not support Nvidia and their antics as long as AMD specs are decent for price.
Will see....

LoL
There are lots of people that can afford it but choose not to pay those prices cause they recognize they are being raped.
Yes, these cards are intended for the people who have to have the very best, price is no object,  bragging rights, etc.
But No one in the real world cares about what card you have, not even your parents living upstairs above the basement.

Quote from: Bipbip on November 23, 2022, 02:39:19They can do that cause they have better software and hardware for many things, not just gaming. Nvidia cards are also being used for productive purposes. If you want to game stick to amd and don't bitch around about the price. The only people that I see bitching around are people without cash.

Guess you are one of those people with more money than brains?
Just because you have the cash, price doesn't matter?  You'll gladly pay a 300% markup and thank them?

I would venture a guess then VERY few people use their Nvidia gaming cards for other purposes then gaming.  Especially now with crypto crash.

Amazing, you can game on older hardware without breaking the bank?

I would have never guessed this was possible, playing a game on a non 4090 or even a 4080. Just imagine your game can run at 200FPS while you aren't viewing at half that rate.

Quote from: samcolons on November 24, 2022, 07:04:27I really don't understand why you need a top of the end graphics card, even low level cards now can support 1080p 60fps which is more than enough even for competitive gaming. These over TDP cards is only useful for miners, now even that is a lost cause.

not everyone's needs are equal. An entry level card is plenty for many people, but there are plenty who need something a lot more powerful. Even current top model cards can delivery performance that is lacking in areas at times.

Agreed 110%

If you can't afford it, the product wasn't meant for you.

Sometimes it's not about if you can afford it or not... Sometimes you have to back the team that supports you the most. Or bends you over the least if you get me drift. Of course some people like that sort of thing. However at their current rate Nvidia won't be a bragging point for how much money you have... Not after they burn your house down. Or excuse me, your sugar daddies house. Seriously both the 3090 and 4090 have had fire issues? For what? The 4090 doesn't even have updated dp. So its not like your gonna use it to play nonexistent 8k titles (or high refresh 4k) so what good is power you can't use... From people that hate their own purchasers. All money aside I'm not gonna pay someone to rob me... Especially if they don't give me usable power in return lol. Nvidia needs to change their tune in a hurry... Of course they can always sell you a lead brick plated in gold and so long as it costs enough... You would probably be happy. (P.s. I had 20 no lhr 3090's before the merge, cash is no issue for me)

Hue, hue! I have mostly the same parts and couldn't be happier with them.
Same MB, same CPU, 32gb of trident Z RAM at 3600, and a Corsair RMx 750W PSU, all bought around 2 years ago. And just bought the 6800xt TUF under MSRP in EU on Black Friday to switch my GTX 1070 Strix. All packed in a white Lian Li Mesh II.

I'm rly happy with how it works in most games at 1440p with 144Hz monitor, and it should still hold me for another 3-4 years until DDR5 memory and MBs will have a decent price to upgrade.
I definitely recommend the build they made.

I'm exceedingly happy with my RTX 4080. Sure, the sticker shock hurt a little, but I want quality and I got it. I've given AMD (ATI back in the day) too many chances over the years to impress me with their GPUs and have always gone back to Nvidia. I often see people complain about games being glitchy, crashing, etc at launch then see they have an AMD card. I have very rarely had any issue with games at launch with an Nvidia card.

I just burnt Sony by spending less on an Xbox one than on a PS5. What a dumb article. Is the 4080 over priced? Sure. "I bought pervious generation hardware for cheaper" isn't much of a burn. For the same price as this build they will be able to get a 7900xtx (you know the AMD card that is actually going to be comparable and competing against a 4080) and none of the rest of the components, maybe a ram stick.

I dont see how this article like..has much of a point.  Nvidia is top notch. Its like saying you can build a cheaper car to be faster than a more expensive one. You can...but the cheap car is still a cheap car. Fast or not. Premiums are paid for nvidia.
