Another win for Intel and Nvidia. The number of people wanting AMD laptop is slim to none.

Can we just get a compact powerhouse?

laptop screens are getting bigger because bezels are getting smaller (finally).  Dimensions of the laptop haven't changed.

I find 17 inch Blade ideal for me. Biggest screen possible and great performance, while having reasonable size for carry-on luggage. And it doesn't look like a spaceship, so I can use it at work and during meetings.
What other options do I have? Portable 17 inch monitor + ITX case/14" laptop? There is no 17" portable monitor with at least 2k resolution (yeah, after using macbook for a while I find FHD resolution too low for 17" for work) from reliable brand, especially with 144Hz refresh rate. And ITX is too bulky, I tried that already.
Yes, Blade 17 is not ideal, but it's the best match for me. I'd like to see Blade 18 with more efficient Ryzen instead and 16:10 OLED screen - that would make me switch instantly.

They do make 4k 17" portables. I have one for the same reasons you listed. They are ridiculously expensive though. I used a 17 blade previously and switched to the 15 zephyrus. I regret that switch every time I use it. I want a decent machine, but I have limits on ridiculously expensive machines. Razer's ridiculous prices keep me away. But no laptop comes close to the sound quality of my old razer.

You are right, there are 4k 17", but as I pointed out they are not from reliable brand and limited to 60hz (at least at the time when I was investigating the market). Yes, Blade is expensive, but paying for a quality thing (unfortunately I can no longer say that about modern Thinkpads..), which I use a lot of time every day - I think it's worth it. And I'm not going to switch it every year, luckily major updates don't happen quite often - next reason to upgrade will be OLED screen or at least +100% GPU performance over my 2080S (which will probably be only 5080Ti )

How about can this finally be more of a standard rather than nonexistent or rare to have 18" screens size. It just seems so wasteful to be trying too hard to make excessively small going smaller than 17" and I'd prefer the 18" size over 17"

Going from 17.3 to 18 or from 15.6 to 16 inch is just going from 16:9 to 16:10 screens. It should not make laptops bigger. It's good that laptop makers finally using previously wasted space under screen.

I don't mind the variety, there are plenty of 14" and 15" gaming laptops, you can choose from any of them.

The Geekbench results are impressive, no doubt, but what is also interesting to point out is the return of the 18-inch chassis. This form-factor was essentially abandoned back in 2012, but it looks like it is now needed again in order to accommodate proper cooling solutions for the upcoming i9-13900HX beats.
