So, we will need again to spend hours and hours to convince some stupid managers that they should not try to change the trackpoint buttons. Would one be happy to change all physical keys in the keyboard with touch keys?? No. Then why should thinkpad users be happy with haptic trackpoint buttons?

Being consistently stupid is exhausting. Dont mess with the trackpoint, period.

"If it aint broke, don't fix it" - No Designer, Ever

I dunno what market Lenovo is trying to grab with these low-travel keyboards and now the return of the clunkpad. It seems like they don't know their core competencies and why people stay loyal to this brand. The only classic Thinkpad design facet I can do without is the clunky bezels.

I never needed the trackpad on ThinkPads for the last 20 years that I've been using them. And I had many over the years.
So I am totally uninterested in any of this. If ThinkPads would completely remove trackpads, I wouldn't mind.
But if they do anything to compromise the TrackPoint, they are done! That's one of the most ingenious and useful parts of the whole Thinkpad experience. Anyone who needs more efficiency and precision would use an external mouse anyways.
So, the article is wrong about most of the optics of a Thinkpad user. This is the important "minority".

When will they come out with a two trackpoint model for us touch typists? One for each index finger. And make it so I can permanently disable the trackpad - for some reason on my Carbon X1 it keeps coming back to life on occasion and interferes.

Lenovo better not even think about it. We are tired trying to provide some common sense to Lenovo and this article is a real problem. Seriously, we have other work to do, and we are not willing to begin a new campaign. It is very clear what dedicated lenovo customers want and repeated attempts to deceive them is becoming frustrating.

I may be in the minority, but I have no interest in 'making the trackpad better while retaining most of the trackpoint functionality'.  I have no use for the trackpad...  its in the way more than its useful. I tolerate it on thinkpad because others like it... but every other computer in existence has a trackpad... lots of choices there.  There is only one trackpoint!

The clunkpad works badly especially on Linux where it was unable to accurately identify whether I'm clicking left, middle or right button .. that creates major frustration compared to the physical buttons ..

If that's still not fixed across all OS'es . the new clickpad is also a clunkpad

I've been using a Z13 coming from classic ThinkPads and I agree with this website's evaluation - it really does work well as a solution to both enhance the touchpad and also retain the Trackpoint functionality. For the first day I wasn't so sure because I hadn't built up the muscle memory, but since then it just works naturally without any thought.

And the haptics-based solution means that when you're using the touchpad, you can also just push anywhere on it to click. It's definitely a step up from what they've been shipping in the X1 Carbon.

My first thought is I hope it fails miserably... since they killed hot swappable batteries the trackpoint with physical buttons is about the only thing that makes the thinkpad unique.   They bought that brand for its uniqueness and seem to put in great effort to kill the things that make thinkpad attractive to its fans.

Lenovo has tried to integrate the functionality of the TrackPoint buttons into the touchpad in the new ThinkPad Z series. This kind of attempt has already failed once. But this time, the innovative design could be a success.
