The reality is that small phones just don't sell that well and it's a small miracle that Apple makes one at all. If you want small phones, you have to buy them. And than perhaps there will be a mini Pro. Otherwise, there might be no mini at all. And then you can whine about phones being too large all you want. After all, in the Android world, even the smaller Pro size is disappearing. It looks like growth has stalled, we won't get to 180, but practically everything under 150 could disappear.

I would actually be compelled to switch from Android for that.
While it would be possible, you can't fool physics. It would come at a cost and I don't mean money. It's a small phone. You've got very little space. And you want it to be light. I for one would prefer a simple single camera, ideally flush without a bump. Even if it meant somewhat worse photographs. I would never use a phone for real photography (too restrictive and not engaging) and it's more than enough for a snapshot. Than again, I don't do social networks. I don't do so-called selfies. I can work just fine with one focal length. I think people are missing the point. A great photograph isn't made by the technology. And no amount of fidelity can compensate for the lack of technique, imagination, skill.

I felt forced to grab the pro for the better camera. I know I'm definitely not alone in this.

An iPhone 13 Mini Pro would have been just the ticket.

The Mini is a perfectly useable phone for people who don't prioritize huge screens. I have one. It's great. The problem is simply that consumers overwhelmingly prefer larger devices.
I feel like many people were afraid that it would be too small for them or that it wouldn't last long enough for them and they didn't bother trying it out, taking the safe route and buying the bigger 11/12/13. I can't recall someone holding my mini and not liking it. It really is a darling. Sure, if you play games or watch videos all the time, it's probably not the phone for you.

I prefer a phone to be phone and a tablet to be tablet. If I want something bigger, I can always bring an iPad mini or Air (or a small laptop if I want a keyboard) which is going to be better than any iPhone. And I don't have to carry a brick in my pocket all the time.

Problem with 13 mini is the size, it should have been 5.6 and it would have remained compact, but not that small and slim, would have ment bigger battery too.
A compact should be compact. The mini is already at the large end of that. I dislike "neither here nor there" designs.

Come on, 0.2 inches would not have changed the Mini's fate, and would not have made any objective improvement in usability. The Mini is a perfectly useable phone for people who don't prioritize huge screens. I have one. It's great. The problem is simply that consumers overwhelmingly prefer larger devices.

It also doesn't help that tech journalists are a bit sheepish in their opinions, so eager to predict the future and so convinced everyone thinks exactly like them that they dump on any product that doesn't meet their highly UN-representative needs. The SE3 was being labeled an abject failure everywhere before it was even released. Such is life in a society who views their opinions as just another tribal product to consume.

Some smartphone innovations are great ideas and make a lasting impact on the market. Others are also great ideas but either fail to launch completely or somehow go the way of the dodo, never to be seen again. Let's look at some recent would-be home runs that just didn't pan out for some reason.
