Ban? What ban? This is not some major disruption in service or having to cancel phones or other products. They will implement a work around that will work as well as what had been possible. No big deal, like these headlines are making it out to be.

Since patents are supposed to be "non-obvious", I don't see how Sonos was ever issued a patent to "adjust the volume using the volume buttons". Maybe Google can still appeal.

The United States International Trade Commission (ITC) has ruled that Google has infringed on multiple patents held by the audio company Sonos with features baked into some of its Nest-brand smart speakers, as well as into some older Pixel-series devices. The Mountain View giant is now obliged to make some potentially major UI and UX changes to avoid an import ban on those products.
