People buy gaming laptops as workstations, and sometimes buy workstations for gaming.Quote from: Dorby on May 17, 2021, 01:42:04The type of people who buy MacBooks. Which doesn't make them workstations. Seriously, XPS is not the machine to buy, even for video editing. It can do the job. MacBook Air can do the job. But it's certainly not a "prosumer" machine. You buy them because they are cheap compared to real workstations and because they look better and are more convenient. It's not for their professional credentials. Not even the fact that OEMs save money by reusing the chassis is going to make them workstations.
Besides the people who buy the XPS 15 and 17 are prosumers who have seriously demanding workflow.
Of course, the right angle is to discuss what is a workstation. But they offer none of the features that distinguished workstations. Unfortunately, many of those features are disappearing in general as proper business notebooks die out and are replaced with glorified consumer machines.
XPS 15 comes nowhere near the performance of a proper gaming laptop. It can perhaps compete with the low-end, but for a lot more money. For similar money, you can get a lot better machine if gaming is what you want.

Quote from: _MT_ on May 16, 2021, 18:32:40Eh this category of laptops - XPS15, Envy15, X1E - used to be labeled "multimedia" but now with how powerful and efficient thin and light 15" laptops have become I would say it's practically the same thing.Quote from: Dorby on May 15, 2021, 17:38:50XPS are multimedia machines, not workstations. IIRC, it used to be essentially their gaming brand before they acquired Alienware. It's their premium consumer offering.
No gaming laptop can fully substitute the mobile workstation lineups like the XPS until they get

Looks like a perfect laptop hope the 3050ti options are cheap. Seems like it's a much better alternative to xps15(to people who prefer 16:10 and that awesome screen to body ratio). New intel chips seems to be promising too.
