I'm confused by this post in general. I bought this same computer a few years ago. 17r4

These new models are called "M" 17 R4. Your is just "Alienware 17 R4"

yes it can get confusing...lol

Lmao uhm what did you expect?? The laptop is going to run hot and throttle with its "thin and light" under an inch 6pds chassis, lol. Especially with the latest intel and running those watts, it has always been like this for the platform. This is why when i see people saying their gonna get an Alienware "M" series laptop to play triple A games, stream, and make videos on or do anything cpu intensive, i HIGHLY recommend going for the 51m R2 series instead (Not the R1 which suffered same heat/throttling issues as their M series). Really the technology in cooling/chassis design just isnt there yet to have a thin and light run at optimal speeds and temps that wont burn the skin off your leg(intel related not ryzen). However after revising the R1 series Alienware shows they can get it right sometimes, and when they do they hit the freaking ball right out of the park. My R2 is an absolute gaming BEAST, it can pull off a 5.3ghz all core and still keep herself under 90c(with the exception being Battlefield). I keep it at 5.2ghz though which is the sweet spot for optimal performance/heat, mostly 80-85c while gaming. Which is ridiculous in a laptop running those speeds. GPU never goes above 70-75c while being overclocked 165core/1000mem. You can already imagine what temps i get if i dont overclock either(but thats not what this badboy was built for ;-P). What is even crazier are my GPU benchmarked scores off this demon. My mobile 2080 Super actually beats a desktop version no bs(even some 3000series!), not by much really, but still beats them nonetheless which is incredible. Dont believe me, thats fine i probably wouldnt either. I cant post any links bc im a "low poster"?? so your gonna have to take my word for it. I got no reason to lie really about stupid benchmarks, so whatever. My timespy graphics score is a cunt hair under 12,000, with an overall score 93% better than all results. Things get even better over on geekbench. My 2080 Super(mobile keep in mind!) scores a 100650 Vulkan score that is identical to a 3070 Desktop(and not to far from a 6900XT!). For OpenCL a score of 127100 which absolutely blows by a 3060ti(desktop) and scored basically equivalent(juuust a little lower) to a 3080 mobile gpu. Alienware and only just a couple of other companies are able to achieve this, having the 2000series mobile gpu's performing like desktop variants(even better when overclocked). From what i understand they are using their own proprietary mxm style board/chip to run these mobile gpu's at near desktop wattages. Mostly every laptop other than Alienware and a select few use a 150w/2080Super with lower clock speeds. While a 200w version(just 50w shy of the desktop 2080 Super's 250w) is utilized in the Alienware. Along with 12 phase graphics voltage regulation (like desktop vrm), 25% Larger cpu inductors, and a 4mm cpu inductor just for the 2080Super gpu. No wonder it is able to overclock and stay stable ripping however long of a gaming session i need! The screen in mine I was able to overclock as well by 30hz, lol 300hz to 330hz now. So surprised i was able to pull this off. Incredible, as when trying to do this with desktop monitors its hard to even overclock them by +1hz without the screen blacking out or stuttering, basically impossible. A few months after i had mine they released the 360hz option which pissed me off at first. Then i quickly realized its a "5m" response time panel and the 300hz that comes on mine is a "3m". I'd take the faster 3m response time of mine over an extra modest +30hz slower 5m response anyday(obviously both response time numbers are probably higher irl but atleast i got the quicker one :-P). Sorry for the long post i just wanted to explain Alienware can actually make extremely good quality products, with the aesthetic of models being the best in the business <arguably>. Im no fanboy (as i also own an Asus Gx701). I just know with the raw performance that the Alienware R2 offers, they absolutely deserve recognition for its qualities and effort. Its not all bad, just gotta do your homework.

I have this exact issue with my brand new M17 R4, bought it moments after it became available in January.

If this is happening to me, per the comments I'm led to believe there's something wrong with my unit, should I send back for replacement or wait for update:? This stuff is all way over my head but it's hotter & louder than sin even when running offline games like Skater XL

3080 with an i7 for reference

Something is wrong with your review unit.  1.7ghz isn't even a valid frequency for the CPU.  I have this exact build and unless I overclock I don't get temps anywhere above 85-90c.  Also, the CPU thermal throttles at 100c, so it should be impossible to hit 105.  And GPU TDP is 165max, not 180.  Did you even get the laptop or just pull this from your a**?

The Alienware m17 R4 is a high-end gaming laptop in a class of its own. The 17-incher achieves top rates in terms of graphics performance in the test, but it also has to struggle with extremely high temperatures.
