Probably, buying a 4-core laptop in 2021 is not very future-proof, especially considering gaming on it. Maybe good enough for the office, but then why would you bother with CPU power at all?

First of all, forget about that silly marketing "nanometers". They don't exactly mean any physical parameter nowadays, more marketing. Intel's "10nm" are the same or even denser packed than TSMC's "7nm". So don't expect any huge room for improvement here from Intel in the nearest future.

Architecture-wise, currently, Cezanne is more interesting. It has better scaling in means of core/power/consumption. It seems to scale better with more cores than Tiger Lake. 8-core Tiger Lake will be either hotter or less efficient than Cezanne - you would see.

But, as for me, 6/12 CPU is just fine for a multipurpose laptop in 2021. Games scale pretty well with 6/12, and, at the same time, it's not as hot or a power hog as 8/16.

yep, Tiger Lake-H with 8 cores will be competitive with Ryzen 5000H series (looking at H35 and what we heard). Will be interesting how the energy consumption is and of course implementation. With Tiger Lake you got the advantage of integrated Thunderbolt 4 (and also partly Wi-Fi that saves power). Only the U-segment will be limited to 4 cores with Intel, so AMD will maintain its multi-thread advantage in this segment (28W class).

The potential will be there. The big question is how efficient they'll be under load. As that will impact how difficult it is to cool and how long it will be able to maintain high boost. If a processor is difficult to cool, only a few machines will realize the potential. That was the biggest weakness of previous 6 and 8 core mobile processors from Intel. And also the pricing. This really depends on laptop manufacturers. Many liked to heavily mark-up the 8 core Intel processors. By hundreds of dollars. Which made them really poor value. If they continue doing it with Intel and not with AMD, AMD will give you much better value.

They're i7 Tiger-Lake U-series chips with higher configurable TDP values, so that should be expected. The 45W Tiger-Lake chips will be the ones that bring extra cores/threads.
