Often, the power brick for these docks is as big as the docks themselves ruining the experience. Or those rare docks which are bus-powered, they don't/can't have as many ports. I want a Thunderbolt 4 dock that's bus-powered and has 1 DisplayPort, 1 HDMI, 1 RJ45, audio jack and 100W passthrough. I don't care about more USB ports as my laptop has enough of them.

This Gen3 unit is not better than the Gen2 socking station:
- Only 1x DP port (2x on Gen2)
- Only 4x USB  type A (6x on Gen2)
- 1 extra TB4 slot

This looks like poor value to me.

The most important question for me is...does the USB C docking station require a display-enabled port on the laptop or will any USB C port work? None of my laptops support DP over USB C.

Yes, it probably requires it unfortunately.

Lenovo has launched two new docking stations at CES 2021. One connects to a notebook via a USB Type-C cable, while the other requires a Thunderbolt 4.0 port. Both docks can power 4K displays and charge peripherals at up to 100W. Their pricing and availability will be revealed at a later date.
