Time-of-flight (or ToF) sensors have become commonplace in higher-end smartphones, fulfilling roles such as depth-perception in photography or advanced face detection for biometrics. Samsung has used them in the past, but has not made its own. Now, however, it seems a new member of the ISOCELL image-sensor family will be dedicated to this task.
