Yeah...one of the reasons I stayed away from Nintendo since PSP is that their consoles lack technological sophistication...
Gameplay > technology. Nintendo's consoles have ALWAYS lagged behind the competition (except perhaps the SNES and some aspects of the GameCube), but their games are insanely fun to play, which is why they stand the test of time.
I don't see people making a Master System Mini.
The Wii is perhaps the best retro console out there because of the vast library it has access to. Wii, GameCube, N64 (Virtual Console or some Emulation), NES, SNES, Game Boy, GBA, Sega Genesis, Neo Geo, Atari 2600, MAME and arcade. The list goes on.
The only console that might outpace the Wii's extensive capability is the Wii U. The Wii U was a terrible console when it was released, but it's aged reasonably well and doubles as an awesome emulation box.

A modder has managed to fit a fully-featured Nintendo Wii into a case the size of a Nintendo Game Boy Color. The Wiiboy Color, as it is called, can play Wii and GameCube games, as well as Virtual Console and Homebrew titles. The device is clever in its construction, as the creator GingerOfMods details in YouTube video.
