I can't say this makes me leap for joy. It only see the prospect of spending about £400 to keep playing games that look pretty much the same as they do on a PS4 isn't filling me with joy... There's still some life left in the old PlayStation and streaming is looking like an increasingly decent alternative from either Xbox or stadia... Sony solution seems to be nowhere in sight. Remote play is still something that only works well on Sony mobile devices. PlayStation now is still a shoddy an impressive collection of old games that have severe latency... they even need to up their game or from some kind of contract with a streaming provider... This will be their last console otherwise.

Its actually pretty nice without the casing.
Believing that the console will look anything at all like that render without the side panels on is wildly optimistic. In all likelihood they clip onto the unpainted inner steel chassis of the console, with the front fascia being another plastic trim piece. (There will always be an inner steel chassis both for rigidity and RF compliance.) That huge bulge on the BD-equipped console isn't an aesthetic choice that suddenly disappears if you remove the trim (if it was, it wouldn't look so damn unsightly), and besides that, the console without the plates will no doubt look unfinished and incomplete. No way is Sony designing this for a "use the plates if you want" styling. That's not how mass-produced products are made.

Three PS5 shell images have apparently been leaked onto a Chinese gaming forum. The pictures show the white plates, or wings, of the next-gen console in a workshop environment. The design of the PlayStation 5 plates implies that they are removable, and it appears the device may be even larger than was already expected.
