Excellent review. I wished i had seen this before purchase.

The noise level from my unit is very loud with a high pitch whine. Support tells me this is normal.
The battery life on a new laptop is about 4 hours at best. Very surprising.
This is with just the laptop and writing code (text files)

Seemed like a good unit from the specs, but the noise, Hot keyboard and poor battery life is pitiful.

My unit purchased Dec 2020

Dear HP, I don't think anyone wants a 1000 dollar laptop with a screen contrast of 680!  I know you can lower the price by 50 dollars by doing so, but maybe that should be saved for the pavillion series!!!!!!!!

A Little Too Familiar, cause it is 2019 all over again.  The 2020 AMD model is the only 15 inch AMD 4700/4800 available that is somewhat higher end. Ideapad 15 with TN screen is a kick in the teeth for AMD. Vendors still let Intel fill the higher spec space for some reason, I guess this will take time. The only way to match the AMD performance is with the 45 watt (heat pump) comet lake......

HP ENVY x360 15-dr Convertible PC is not the 2020 version.
HP ENVY x360 15-ed Convertible PC is the 2020 version.
the most obvious change in the 2020 version of the Envy is the change to the fingerprint reader and power button on the keyboard.

Add to that the 15-ee for the Ryzen version...

Yeah, the -dr versions are the old models, first released in IIRC May/June 2019, with a Comet Lake refresh in September.

That would be a 2020:

also available with Comet Lake+MX330:

or an example for the Renoir variant:

IMO an even more important difference to the 2019 models: A redesigned cooling system (fan outlet moved to the back).

(Edit: Suffice to say that I found this quite disappointing after looking forward to the new Envy convertible reviews...)

looks like a 2019.5 model, HP has some with the thick bezel on bottom for sale but they look like a model modified from 2019.  Maybe covid stop gap.  Thin bezel and fingerprint reader on keyboard and thinner is 2020.

For better or worse, the Envy x360 15 hasn't changed all that much in the past couple of years. It's still as strong as ever for its category, but certain drawbacks are becoming more apparent.
